      <image:title>Blog - The medicine of love. - This Valentines day let’s talk about self compassion: The love we give ourselves.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fe0d8382d8b6025a702dfcc/1708019988271-4IY6DMBN5FLFE70XXAN4/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - The medicine of love. - We need to make time to check in…</image:title>
      <image:caption>This isn’t always easy. The demands of life can mean very quickly we become low on our priority list. It is easy to get caught up in the fast-pace of life and our ‘to do’ lists. And not take time to check in with how we are and how we are doing. We need to make time for ourselves and learn how to spend that time ‘not doing’ and just ‘being’. Time for rest, reflection, dreaming and contemplation. Loving ourselves means being honest and true to ourselves and our needs. In order to do this we need to take the time to get to know ourselves better by doing the inner-work; Observing our inner landscape (our thoughts, emotions, and inner-dialogue / inner-critic). And getting to know all of our parts. Even those we prefer not to know!</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fe0d8382d8b6025a702dfcc/1708020100092-QLXPHGM170UZT76S8ZXX/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - The medicine of love. - Practising self awareness</image:title>
      <image:caption>When our inner-critic is at play we are acting from a place of fear, rather than a place of love. We are responding to the world through conditioned and often destructive patterns of behaviour, based on our emotions and perception of the world or the lens through which we see the world. This is based on our memories, judgments, imagination, fears, or what we think we need or desire. To fix the problem we look for happiness outside of ourselves. A quick fix. But this will only temporarily fix the problem. Living our lives in this misguided way can be exhausting. It can cause unnecessary stress on our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. By practising self awareness we can identify the stories we tell ourselves and the limiting beliefs that are holding us back, with compassion towards ourselves. We can then begin to put some space around them, or sometimes release them completely.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Blog - The medicine of love. - Shadow work</image:title>
      <image:caption>In order to live a fulfilled, happy, balanced life, we need to shine a light on our shadows, get to know our inner critics, and own them, so they don’t own us! And the more we can accept and have compassion for these parts of us, the more we can accept and be compassionate towards others. By shining a light on our shadows they no longer have the same power over us. We can touch our wounds with tenderness and compassion, gently releasing anything toxic and helping our hearts to heal. This is the beginning of the healing journey. Through self awareness, self-compassion and self-acceptance, we can repair what is frightened, or broken, and forgive and let go of the past and anything no longer serving us. With a gentle, loving kindness towards ourselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The medicine of love. - A simple self-compassion practice to get started…</image:title>
      <image:caption>Seated or lying, make sure you are comfortable and relaxed in your body. If seated ensure you are supported at your base, so the spine is awake but not rigid. Relax all the muscles in the face and relax the jaw. Begin to draw your awareness into your body. Notice your breath. Turning your attention to where you sense the breath the most (nostrils, throat, chest, belly). Now draw your awareness to your heart space. Observe how this space feels. What do you notice? What emotions arise? Now bring to mind a person, or pet, or place that you love and brings you a sense of joy. Notice how this feels in your body. Now breathe this feeling into your heart space. Repeat this for x10 breath cycles. Enjoy!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Autumn reflections… - Remember each moment you breathe is a gift.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Worrying about our futures and chasing the dream can leave us feeling exhausted. If we aren’t careful we can become so busy looking outside ourselves for happiness and searching for the ‘happily ever after’, we forget we are living in this moment. It is important for our mental health to learn to live consciously, in the present moment, and not to let life pass us by.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Autumn reflections… - What are we striving for?</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our striving can be driven by a sense of inadequacy, self doubt, or low self esteem, usually triggered by past life experiences. We need to address and challenge these destructive thoughts and behaviours, which only cause us suffering., and leave them behind us, choosing instead to act from a place of compassion and love. This will leave us feeling stronger, more centred, more relaxed, aligned with our goals, and connected with ourselves, and those around us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Autumn reflections… - We need to trust in the learning.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Be careful not to judge or compare yourself to others, as we are each walking a different path and at a different part of the process. Remember that what you see on social media is not real life! Ditch the inner-critic and accept the process cannot be hurried. Be patient and compassionate with yourself, instead rewarding your efforts by celebrating the small wins. Learning is a process of refinement and personal growth. It’s a process which takes time and practice.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Autumn reflections… - The physical practice</image:title>
      <image:caption>When we get trapped in the workings of our mind, an embodied physical yoga practice will bring us back into our bodies. Movement and breathing techniques are used to teach us how to listen and pay attention to the messages the body is giving us, acknowledge how we are feeling, understand the connection between mind and body, learn from our body’s wisdom and respond appropriately. The practice cannot be forced. It unfolds from a place of deep listening, love and compassion for oneself. When we begin our efforts might feel a little clumsy and we make mistakes, but gradually with practice and effort it begins to feel more comfortable, natural, even joyful.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Autumn reflections… - Yoga Nidra</image:title>
      <image:caption>The practice of Yoga Nidra is a conscious relaxation that is a deeply restful practice. Unlike meditation, where you are in a conscious awake state, you are guided towards a conscious sleep state, where we surrender into ourselves and can experience our full nature. Its a great alternative if you struggle with meditation. , It relaxes our nervous system, reduces stress and anxiety, and Is a valuable practice if you suffer from sleep deprivation, and to turn to when life feels overwhelming.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why we need to slow down. - How stress affects us.</image:title>
      <image:caption>There are often telltale signs that our nervous system is in overdrive. These can include: headaches fatigue irritability lack of coordination impaired mental ability, or being unable to think straight and brain fog/memory loss. This in turn impedes how we function, can impact our emotional health, and how we relate towards others. If we can find the time to slow down, before its too late, our bodies and minds will thank us for it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why we need to slow down. - And let’s not forget everything we miss out on when we rush through life!</image:title>
      <image:caption>When you are feeling there isn’t the time to stop, or to rest and take some time for yourself, this is when you need it the most. Finding a sense of calm and control is vital for our wellbeing. When we feel we are losing control over our lives and our health we become vulnerable to all manner of mental and physical ills, including increased risk of heart disease and immune system disorders. We can’t always control what is happening to us. But we can develop coping skills to help us.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why we need to slow down. - Here are simple things we can choose to do to add some slow time into each day.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Walk, rather than drive. There is always so much to see on a walk. And walking can be where you do some of your best thinking. Walking to work can set you up for your day, and help you to wind down at the end of the day. Take time to cook a nice meal. Source your ingredients, enjoy the process of cooking your meal and eat slowly. Enjoy the full experience. Put boundaries over your smart phone use. It could simply be turning off notifications, switching off an hour earlier each day or unplugging at the weekend. Try a simple meditation observing the breath. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just 5 minutes noticing your breath can be beneficial. Every time your mind wanders just bring your attention back to observing the breath.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Why we need to slow down. - Slow wins the race!</image:title>
      <image:caption>Carl Honore’s book, ‘In praise of slow’ touches on Yoga and Chi Kung as two meditative movement practices that help us to slow down. He also mentions a weight lifting movement called SuperSlow founded by Ken Hutchins in America in the 1980s. SuperSlow works by slowing down the time taken to lift and lower a weight to 20 seconds. The slowness eliminates momentum, forcing muscles to work to complete exhaustion, which in turn encourages them to rebuild more quickly. Studies concluded that SuperSlow boosted strength by 50% more than conventional weight lifting, also supports bone strength and density, and boosts the body’s metabolism. So going slow often wins the race!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Who is Vanda Scaravelli? - A practice that honours the individual.</image:title>
      <image:caption>A good Yoga teacher and class should honour the individual in us all. The teacher should provide us with the knowledge and tools to develop our own personal practice, a practice that meets the individual’s needs. We each have different needs, on different days, weeks, months, years. Our practice should meet those needs. A ‘method’ that suits one person, may not be suitable for another. It should meet us where we are, on any given day.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Vanda’s approach offered something different. The something I was seeking in my practice. Where movement becomes meditation. An embodied movement practice, using conscious movement with breath to sharpen the mind-body connection. Vanda Scaravelli's key teaching principles and approach to Yoga, are the careful attention to the subtle qualities which support healthy movement; breath, our relationship with gravity, and the spine (or deep core). Her teaching and approach has been beautifully collated in her only book ‘Awakening the Spine’. A beautiful, inspirational book that I can highly recommend.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>By working with breath and gravity we discover an amazing balance of strength and lightness, space and ease in our body. The practice has transformed my relationship with myself and my body, as I have connected with myself on a deeper level, and am learning to let go of judgement, competitiveness and self doubt, replacing it with the language of acceptance, loving kindness and empathy towards myself, and my body. It has transformed the way I stand, walk, run, move through everyday life, breathe and relate to myself. I have found the practice both inspirational and transformational, and am passionate about sharing the many benefits to be found from this practice with others.</image:caption>
